What is Ashtakoota 36 guna matching?

Ashtakoota is the most widely used marriage-matching method in Vedic astrology. It derives eight factors from each person's moon sign and birth nakshatra, each carrying its own weight, adding up to 36. Note that it works from the Moon's position rather than the Sun's — which is why the sign it reports is often not the one people think of as theirs.

The charts here are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris using the Lahiri ayanamsa — the same sidereal calculation professional software performs. Nothing is pre-written and nothing is estimated.

The eight kootas and their points

KootaPointsWhat it measures
Varna1Compares the spiritual temperament of the two moon signs. Scored only when the groom's varna is equal to or above the bride's, which is why many otherwise strong matches lose this single point.
Vashya2Mutual influence — who naturally accommodates whom. Signs in the same vashya group score fully; the wild and human groups are treated as incompatible.
Tara3Counts the distance between the two birth nakshatras in both directions. It is the koota most sensitive to birth time, because the Moon changes nakshatra roughly every day.
Yoni4Physical and instinctive compatibility, drawn from the animal symbol of each nakshatra. Same-yoni pairs score fully; a few pairings are treated as natural opposites.
Graha Maitri5Friendship between the planets ruling each moon sign — the koota traditionally read as mental and emotional compatibility, and the one most often cited when a low total still feels workable.
Gana6Temperament class of each nakshatra — deva, manushya or rakshasa. A deva–rakshasa pairing is the one combination that scores nothing here.
Bhakoot7The angular relationship between the two moon signs. Certain distances score zero and are called Bhakoot dosha — this is the single largest swing in the whole calculation.
Nadi8Constitutional type from the nakshatra — vata, pitta or kapha. Carrying the most points of any koota, and scoring zero when both share the same Nadi, which is called Nadi dosha.

Thirty-six in total. Nadi (8) and Bhakoot (7) together carry more than half the points, which is why a zero in either one drops the total so sharply.

How many gunas are considered enough?

0 – 17Traditionally not recommended
18 – 24Average — considered workable
25 – 32Very good
33 – 36Excellent

These bands are traditional conventions rather than verdicts. A low total with strong Graha Maitri is often read favourably, and a high total does not remove a dosha from consideration.

Frequently asked

Is birth time required for Kundli matching?

Preferred, but not required. Four of the eight kootas — Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi — depend on the birth nakshatra, and the Moon changes nakshatra roughly every day, so those four become less reliable without a time. Tick the birth-time-unknown box and the calculation still runs.

How many out of 36 gunas is a good score?

Traditionally 18 or above is treated as workable, above 25 as very good, and above 32 as excellent. Below 18 the usual advice is to weigh the remaining factors rather than read the number alone.

Is this calculator free?

Yes — no account, no payment and no limit. Charts are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris using the Lahiri ayanamsa, the same engine professional Jyotish software runs on.

What if there is Nadi dosha or Bhakoot dosha?

Traditionally neither is read in isolation. Both are weighed against Graha Maitri and the other kootas, and remedies are commonly suggested. This page tells you whether a dosha is present; the fuller reading lives in the KundliDost app.

Are my birth details saved?

No. The details are sent to compute the charts and are gone the moment the answer comes back — nothing is stored and no account is created.
